Vinous schluckt IWC

Der Wine-Advocate bekommt massive Konkurrenz. Man darf gespannt sein, wer am Ende die Nase vorn hat. Ich setze auf Galloni! Diese Meldung wurde heute von Galloni herausgegeben:

This morning I am thrilled to announce that Vinous has agreed to acquire Stephen Tanzer’s International Wine Cellar. You, our loyal subscribers, are the first to hear the news. The press release is here.

One of the most admired and respected tasters in the world, Steve Tanzer has set a high bar for independent wine criticism since he founded IWC in 1985. I have known Steve for over a decade, first as a reader of IWC and later as a colleague. I am delighted to welcome Steve to Vinous and am confident readers will find tremendous value in his insights and considerable experience.

I will continue to review the wines of Italy, Napa Valley, Champagne, Bordeaux, Sonoma, Santa Barbara and the Santa Cruz Mountains. Steve will take over primary responsibility for reviewing new releases from Burgundy (including Chablis), Washington, Argentina, South Africa, New Zealand, Port and Tokaj. I plan to spend a good amount of time in Burgundy, but my focus over the near and medium term will be on our interactive map project, although I will continue to visit domaines Steve has historically not covered. In a similar vein, Steve will continue to write about Napa Valley, where his focus will be on vertical and retrospective tastings. Steve's first article for Vinous will be on Washington.

Along with Steve, we will be welcoming the entire IWC editorial team to Vinous. Josh Raynolds will cover Spain, Rhône, Languedoc, Roussillon, Provence, Oregon, Australia, Paso Robles, Santa Lucia Highlands and Chile. Josh’s passion, enthusiasm and knowledge are incredibly wide-ranging. I am sure Vinous readers will feel the same way. Josh’s first article for Vinous will focus on new releases from the Rhône Valley.

When it comes to Italy, there is no one I hold in higher regard than Ian D'Agata. I have asked Ian to take over Central and Southern Italy, where the proliferation of top-flight wines now requires more time and attention than I have been able to dedicate. Ian’s first new article for Vinous will be on Alsace, a long-standing passion and a region Ian has visited regularly for the last 30 years. Ian will also be reporting on the wines of his native Canada.

Joel Payne will cover Austria, Germany and the Loire, three world-class regions that deserve more attention. Personally, I am looking forward to learning from Joel, as I adore those wines, but don't get to spend as much time with them as I would like to. Joel’s first article for Vinous will focus on Chenin Blanc, and will be followed by three verticals of Germany's greatest Rieslings.

Over the coming days and weeks we will be adding IWC's archive of 150,000 reviews and more than 500 articles to the Vinous database. During this time, the existing IWC website will continue to operate. We will also be publishing the entire contents of IWC Issue 177 on Vinous in the near future, including Josh on Santa Barbara and Champagne and Ian on Tuscany. There are bound to be some hiccups during this time of transition, so we ask for your patience. Be sure to consult this FAQ, where we will post updates.

In closing, I believe we now have one of the best and most experienced teams of wine critics in the business. I have never been more excited about Vinous than I am today. Please join me in welcoming Steve, Josh, Ian and Joel to Vinous.

Das ist in jedem Fall ein kluger Zusammenschluss. Am Ende wären m.E. die vielen "Allrounder"-Seiten wie Vinous, IWC, John Gilman in der Bedeutungslosigkeit verschwunden. Aus meiner Sicht ist am Markt Platz für zwei bis drei Allrounder-Seiten (das wären jetzt Wine Advocate, Vinous und Jancis Robinson (ggf. auch Wine Spectator, aber der scheint mir sehr US-lastig zu sein)) und noch ein paar Special-Interest-Seiten wie Burghound.

Ich hatte mal ein Jahr den IWC abonniert, war aber nicht 100% überzeugt, auch wenn ich Tanzers Bordeaux-Notizen ganz gut finde und Ian d'Agata immerhin über das Elsass schreibt. Vinous habe ich mir noch nicht en Detail angesehen, nur ein oder zwei frei einsehbare Texte von Antonio Galloni, die mir nicht zugesagt haben (zu "aufgeregter" Schreibstil). Hartmut, wie bist du denn mit Vinous zufrieden?

Zum Parker-Vergleich: Ich denke, es hängt alles davon ab, wie lange Parker noch an Bord des WA bleibt. Lange wird es aber nicht mehr sein (3 Jahre, 4 Jahre?). Danach wird sich Vinous durchsetzen, da bin ich ziemlich sicher. Vielleicht holt Galloni ja auch noch David Schildknecht an Bord?

Hallo Stephan,

bisher habe ich mich nicht dazu durchringen können, 120 $ für Vinous auszugeben, insofern kann ich mir kein Urteil erlauben. Ich werde mich aber als Kurzabonnent des IWC demnächst "einschleichen" können und werde dann berichten.

Ich halte den Zusammenschluss ebenfalls für folgerichtig, denn man merkte in letzter Zeit schon, dass das Tanzer-Team der Vielzahl der Weine nicht mehr Herr wurde.

Gespannt darf man sein, ob sich die Bewertungen von Galloni (eher hoch) und Tanzer (eher niedrig) in Zukunft annähern werden.

Vinous verstärkt sich weiter: David Schildknecht kommt, Joel Paene geht. Diese Nachricht wurde heute veröffentlicht:

One of the brightest minds in wine, David brings with him nearly forty years of experience, during which he has built a brilliant career rich in accolades as one of the world’s foremost experts on the wines of Germany and Austria, among other regions. David’s articles have appeared in a number of publications, including Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar, Wine & Spirits, The World of Fine Wine, The Wine Advocate and Vinaria, as well as the 4th edition of The Oxford Companion to Wine. I have known David personally for close to a decade and am excited to be working with him once again. David’s first articles for Vinous will be comprehensive reports on new and upcoming releases from Germany and Austria.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank Joel Payne for his numerous contributions to Vinous over the last year. We will be publishing Joel’s remaining articles, including 2013 Austria, 2005 Germany Verticals and Portugal new releases, over the coming weeks. We wish Joel all the best in his future endeavors.

Spannend, hab's auch gelesen... mal schauen, ob DS es schafft, bei Vinous seine Notizen etwas frühzeitiger rauszubringen als beim WA. Inhaltlich finde ich seine Arbeit ja echt gut - deutlich mehr Tiefe als bei anderen Verkostern / Autoren - aber oft kamen seine VKN zu spät, um noch auswahl- / kaufrelevant zu sein. Wenn sich das ändert, wäre das eine echte Aufwertung von Vinous.

Vinous ist ja nicht ein solches Korsett von Veröffentlichungsterminen gepresst wie der Wine-Advocate, das lässt hoffen.
