Assyrtiko-Probe in Berlin am 17. August
The absolute highlights of the evening were Louroi Platia 2017 by Artemis Karamolegos (Santorini) and Clos Stegasta 2020 by T-Oinos Tinos).
Both orange wines were very good: Mystirio 14 2016 by Artemnis Karamolegos and YLI 35 2019 by Yannis Papargyriou.
Hatzidakis' famous Louros 2016 was amongst the best wines, but it was outperformed by Karamolegos' Louroi Platia 2017. Their Cuvée 15 of 2013 is still a very good wine, but it has seen better days and is slowly declining as years go by (peak was 2019/20/21). Also by Hatzidakis and very good: Nykteri 2018 (less opulent than expected), Skitali Vareli 2019 (one of the top wines of the evening), and Vinsanto 2003 (like a PX, but less alcoholic and with a lot more acidity).
Also among the top wines was Cuvée Monsignori 2017 by Argyros. A great surprise was Manousakis' Assyrtiko 2016, which is on the level of a good Santorini wine and probably on its peak now. Santorini 2019 by Akra Chrysos, a very good wine, suffered a bit from being in the same flight with Clos Stagasta 2020, one of the stars of the evening. Another great wine, but an outlier regarding style (golden, rich and intense with aromas of orange peel on the palate) is Yannis Papargyriou's Roi de Montagne 2021. Gavalas' 2022 Santorini from the blue bottle was lean, fresh and citric, but still too young. On the other hand Sigalas' Santorini 2017 was already declining. Even more so was Neo White NV (lot 0004/15) by Philos/Korinth. Kanaris' Dreamcatcher 2021 is a very pleasant wine and a very good buy at a price less than 7€ , but not serious competitor to the really good wines of this tasting, which cost more than 20€.
We hat two 2020 retsines, Pine Forest by Gikas (Attika) and Tear of the Pine by Kechris (Thessaloniki), both of them very good, but different in style. The Tear of the Pine is completely dry and has a lot of raisin (for me a bit too much) wheras the raisin in the Pine Forest is more moderate, but there is some residual sugar. My ideal Retsina would be bone-dry as the Tear of the Pine and moderately raisined like the Pine Forest. Finally there was Karanika's Cuvée Prestige 2017 with 30% Xinomavro BdN, a very good sparkling wine with some oxidative note and a hint of sweetness. I would prefer it to most brand champagnes like Veuve Cliquot, Pommery or Moet Chandon, by a decent winemaker's champagne would be still better (and more expensive).
The pirate, Jim Barry's Assyrtiko 2021 (Clare Valley, AUS), was good, but not a serious competitor to most of the Greek wines.
