Some Thoughts on 2011 Bordeaux
1.just landed in Paris where the weather is more like summer than spring
2. 10 days immersed tasting 2011s was more fun than I thought-despite the unusually mediocre summer, the wines are ripe,deeply colored,very aromatic,generally quite pure, medium weight, and with higher acids than the two great years of 2009 and 2010
3.complicated vintage to navigate...irregular,but very rewarding to those who got it right
4.seems most consistent in Pomerol,then ST.Emilion,but the prestigious AOCs of the Medoc have done well
5.Graves is probably the most inconsistent,but the ST.Estephes that were hailed on SEPT 1 are lighter than normal
6.the petits chateaux range fom wonderful successes to disappointing,but overal I am thrilled by the hundreds of delicious and inexpensive Bordeaux emerging from the region

I need to reflect and digest volumes of notes, but I think the vintage may be close to both 2008 and 2001 in overall quality...quantities are smallish....the big question is pricing...I could see a modest futures market if prices were slashed ,but I fear the price reductions will be far less than consumers and the trade desire...Bordeaux is still riding a rather astonishing bubble,but 2010s, in spite of their exceptional quality, are frozen in the pipeline....which should be a message to be careful pricing 2011s...there appears to be little or no 2009s left at the chateau level although this is impossible to verify...the bottom line is that the vintage is better than I expected....

sowas lese ich gern, das steigert die Vorfreude. Ich hoffe, die nächste Woche wird viel Sonne und gute Weine bringen. Spaß werden wir allemal haben.

Über die Preisgestaltung des Jahrgangs mache ich mir erst einmal keine Gedanken, zumal ich Forderungen nach Preissenkungen auf das 2008er Primeur-Niveau für ziemlich unrealistisch halte.

Ja, ja, Frankreich zu dieser Jahreszeit, vor allem bei diesem Wetter ist herrlich, Paris und sicher auch Bordeaux.
Da spielt nun BDX 2011 EnPrimeur nicht unbedingt so eine Rolle.
Zumal die Preisblase für BDX noch nicht geplatzt ist, wenn sie überhaupt platzen wird.
Ich erfreue mich gerade an ein paar alten Bdx aus den 60ern und 70ern, herrlich wie das alte Zeugs schmecken kann, wenn es denn sehr gut gelagert wurde.
Da spielt das Chateau nur eine Nebenrolle.

na ja so überraschend ist das nicht, die Vergleiche insbesondere zu
2008 tauchten ja schon vorher an verschiedenen "Orten" auf...
Gil, der immer ein ganz ordentlich Indikator ist, hat es auf dem Parkerboard
ebenfalls schon "vorherweisgesagt"...

Ob die Aussagen beeinflussen? Das muss jeder für sich beantworten...

Ich verstehe die Parkersche Aussage ja eher als (vermutlich eher armseligen) Versuch, die Erwartungen und damit die Preisschraube herunterzudrehen, egal wie immer der Jahrgang sein wird
und außerdem muss ihn im Zweifel sein Geschwätz von gestern bzw. vom 14.03. ja auch nicht stören

Suckling will wie immer viele Punkte geben:

I have already tasted about 350 wines since I arrived in Bordeaux over a week ago, and I must say that I am impressed. It’s not that 2011 is a great vintage. It couldn’t be, considering the bizarre grape-growing season, and it followed two extraordinary vintages: 2009 and 2010.

However, most of the reds show very good fruit with intense tannins and bright acidity. They are racy wines with pretty perfumes and an underlying tannin backbone of breed. (I am tasting in Larcis Ducasse in the photo.)

The whites are exceptional – both dry and sweet. I found one wine that should be a perfect, 100-point wine: La Mission Haut-Brion Blanc. The Sauternes of d’Yquem and Rieussec are 95-plus wines.

I think that Bordeaux winemakers are some of the best in the world. They had an upside down growing season in 2011. The spring was like the summer with extremely hot weather and drought conditions. Summer was like autumn, relatively cool with some precipitation, and autumn was like summer again. Crazy.

Yet through meticulous vineyard management and precise harvesting, they picked excellent grapes. Those who didn’t try to work their wines too much through excessive macerations after the alcoholic fermentation made balanced and attractive wines.

I find it interesting that a large part of the 2011 reds have the same, or more, tannin content than 2010 and 2009. Most have close to the same acidity strength as 2010. But they don’t have the alcohol levels, meaning the fruit. They don’t have the flesh or fat of the 2010. That makes the difference. They are lanky compared to the voluptuous and structured 2009 and 2010.

I don’t think I will find any 100-point 2011 red wines in my list of close to 400 wines that should be posted on Monday on this site. But I am sure a handful of wines will be 95 points or more.

This means that 2011 is a very good vintage – and in some cases, with outstanding wines. It’s going to be a year that we Bordeaux lovers are going to enjoy drinking in the future.

I find it strange that many winemakers in Bordeaux say that it is inconsistent – or as many French château owners keep saying to me, hétérogène.

I don’t find the vintage like that. The hundreds of wines I have tasted have been very good to outstanding quality. Some have slightly hollow center palates or lack fruit concentration. Some are slightly too tannic and extracted. But some very good wines are out there from Castillon Côtes de Bordeaux to Pauillac.

This is a fascinating tasting trip, and I have tasted from barrel in Bordeaux for 29 years. Stay tuned.
